Facebook Advertising
« on: May 29, 2010, 07:24:10 AM »
I was working with some friends last night who happen to own an eco-tourism lodge and of course with the economy that business is in a slump.  We looked into different forms of internet advertising last year with dismal results.  So this year, we turned to Facebook, since it has over 400 million users, it covers a huge potential market.

The advantages stood out immediately:

Ease of set up.

Pinpoint demographic targeting.  You can target so accurately that you can actually reach only ONE specific person if you know their info.  If you want to target single women turning 30 on July 10 who live in a particular town and are interested in books, knitting and bungee jumping... you can do so.

Choice of CPC or CPM.

Ability to set your bid per click and daily budget.

The disadvantage of this for a small business is the price.  The bids per click are in the $1.00 range.  The minimum daily budget you can set up is $1.00 a day, $50.00 per day is the recommended starting level.  *gulp*  I know it's worth it for the demographic accuracy that Facebook provides, but still....  :o

The free alternatives, still using Facebook are to set up an Fan page or Event page.

I actually was considering advertising on FaceBook and looked at all the help pages etc. And this is exactly what I could not find, what prices to expect. And I wasn't feeling like going through setting up a campaign just yet only to see what options I have. Furthermore I didn't like that the only option to pay is via CC. Oh well...
Have not decided yet but I eventually will be trying it as I can specifically target a German Audience there who might be interested in my business. Am also using Google Adwords but as my website was down for a long time I am yet to expect results from there now.

Thank You for the information, to me it was very valuable at this point.

Rumour has it they may be adding Paypal sometime in the future as a payment option.  One of their partner networks added Paypal a few months ago.

A friend of mine told me recently that he advertised his latest CD via his website on Facebook twice.  The first time he lost his shirt on the campaign.  The second time he narrowed the ads down to only areas where he had performed and tighter music genres. He was very pleased with the second set of results. He didn't give any specifics, only that he was pleased and will be tweaking a bit and advertising again.
